What is Voice Dialogue?

Voice Dialogue is a playful, adventurous and very powerful method to guide you in understanding your inner drives and motivations better. This will help you to provide more effective and conscious direction to the things you say and do.

Behind Voice Dialogue lies a  clear psychological theory known as the “Psychology of Selves”, which was developed by Hal and Sidra Stone. This theory describes how people are guided by different and often conflicting sides of their personality, also known as “Selves”.

In a Voice Dialogue session you encounter  parts of yourself, which you often know very well and guide you successfully in your life. But also the parts which are bit more on the background, or who struggle to be heard. Or with whom you feel less comfortable. You learn to know that all these parts have a purpose, they wish you well and want to help you in your life. Listening to all these part will make you more reflective and resilient.

When I followed my training as Voice Dialogue facilitor at the Voice Dialogue Academy, I was deeply impressed with how empathetic and effective this method is. It helped me personally  to embrace my rational side, and still feel the empathic connection with myself and others. You can read my personal experience here

I can heartily recommend Voice Dialogue when you are struggling with an internal conflict or dilemma. It also fits perfectly after completion or in combination with a Coaching in Nature trajectory.

What can I expect from Voice Dialogue?

In the initial session, you’ll share your current life situation and the dilemmas you’re grappling with. This often illuminates distinct facets of your personality, as these different aspects often underlie the dilemmas. Often, some different sides of you are then already becoming quite clear, because it is these different sides, which are causing your dilemma in the first place.

As your Voice Dialogue facilitator, I engage in what can be described as a direct conversation with these distinct facets of you, known as the “Selves.” Each facet occupies a unique place in the space of the room. This immersive approach allows you to genuinely experience the thoughts, emotions, and energy of these facets, gaining insight into their intentions and actions. We typically start with the most prominent facet contributing to your dilemma, but we can later explore others aimed at better coping with your situation. After each conversation, we return to the “middle seat” to reflect on the insights gained.

During these conversations, it’s common for additional facets to emerge, seeking their turn to be heard. As a trained facilitator, I recognize this and may ask them to be patient for later discussions. Hence, a Voice Dialogue journey often spans several sessions. Typically, we engage with no more than two facets in each session. Over five sessions, we address the most critical primary selves and other facets requiring attention. Additional sessions may delve into hidden aspects or revisit dominant facets that require further exploration.

Throughout this process, your comfort and safety are paramount, and we only proceed as far as you’re comfortable with.

The objective is for you to realize how these facets contribute positively to your life and deserve your love and attention. You remain in control throughout, resulting in increased self-assurance and a gentler attitude toward yourself and others. This, in turn, aids in making more confident decisions.

“I was at first a bit nervous to enter a Voice Dialogue session during a challenging period in my life. Bram radiated confidence and support to embark on the adventure. I found Bram’s guidance very professional, and in the secure environment, I could also allow vulnerable parts of myself to be present. The lovely place where Bram conducted the sessions added an extra touch to the whole experience. Bram led me to profound insights that helped me further on my journey in life.”

How Voice Dialogue helped me

Some time ago I felt an internal conflict: my “rational self” had brought me success in life, but I was bugged by a strong feeling of guilt; of letting down the people who are most important in my life. I started to dislike my “rational self”, but was also scared to let my “emotional side” be in the driving seat. This confused me, and made me feel bad about myself.

In one of the Voice Dialogue session, which were part of my training I discovered that my “rational self” pushes my emotions away to protect me against emotional pain. It tells me things like: “Don’t go there, it will make you feel bad!” or “Don’t enjoy this too much: before you know it is over, and you feel bad”. But this side is also a fantastic storyteller, and insprirational for other people. It helped me in social situations and is great in dissecting big problems in smaller easy-to-solve bits. Voice Dialogue allowed me to embrace this side again, but also to give some more space to my emotional side.

My “emotional side” does not have many words, feels sad sometimes. To allow this part to be more present, I felt more pain, but also more joy, and a deeper connection with others. It helps me feel less tension, to relax and to connect better with myself and others.
