What is Voice Dialogue?

Discover parts of yourself with Voice Dialogue

Voice Dialogue is a playful, insightful, and highly effective method that helps you explore your inner motivations and driving forces. As a result, it becomes easier to understand why you make certain choices in life and how you can consciously influence what you say and do.

What Is Voice Dialogue Based On? The Theory Behind the Method

The method is based on a clear psychological framework known as the Psychology of Selves, developed by Hal and Sidra Stone. According to this theory, we are all guided by different—and often conflicting—parts of our personality. These parts are sometimes called “selves” .

During a Voice Dialogue session, you encounter parts of yourself that you already know well: your primary selves. These are the parts that help you function successfully in daily life. However, you will also meet disowned parts—aspects of yourself that operate in the background or that you rarely express because they feel uncomfortable. Each of these parts has a purpose and genuinely wants to support you, although they all try to help in different ways. Because of this, their conflicting intentions can sometimes create tension, restlessness, or ongoing overthinking. By giving these inner voices space to speak, you begin to understand their intentions and gain more clarity about your internal dynamics. This process helps you develop greater self-awareness and emotional resilience.

When is Voice Dialogue suitable for you?

Voice Dialogue is highly recommended if you are facing an inner conflict or dilemma. Moreover, it combines beautifully with a Coaching in Nature trajectory, since both methods slow you down and help you reconnect with yourself.

During my training as a Voice Dialogue facilitator at the Voice Dialogue Academy, I was deeply impressed by how empathetic and powerful this method is. It helped me embrace my analytical side while staying connected to my emotional self. You can read my personal experience here.

What can I expect from Voice Dialogue?

You can experience Voice Dialogue either in person at my practice in Bodegraven or online, as the method works equally well in both settings.

How does a Voice Dialogue journey start?

During the first session, I will ask about your situation and the dilemmas you are struggling with. As a trained Voice Dialogue facilitator, I listen for the different parts of your personality—your inner selves—that often lie at the core of these dilemmas. Usually, one or two of these sides become clear quite quickly, because they are often the voices that create the inner conflict.

What happens during a session?

As your Voice Dialogue facilitator, I speak directly with these distinct inner parts as if they are full characters with their own goals, fears, needs, and personal history. Each “self” has its own place in the room. This physical separation helps you feel and understand the emotions, thoughts, and energy of each inner voice.

Typically, we begin with your most dominant part—the primary self—before exploring other sides that may help you navigate your situation more effectively. After each dialogue, we return to the “middle chair” to reflect on what you have discovered.

Why multiple sessions?

As the conversation unfolds, additional parts often reveal themselves, wishing to be heard as well. When this happens, I can guide the process so that they wait their turn. This is one reason why a Voice Dialogue trajectory usually consists of multiple sessions. In most cases, we explore no more than two selves per session. On average, it takes around five sessions to meet the most important primary and disowned selves and understand their unique sensitivities.

How can Voice Dialogue benefit you?

Gradually, this creates a process in which you become more conscious, more balanced, and more free in your choices—while showing compassion for the different parts of your personality that may sometimes want conflicting things. In Voice Dialogue, we call this the “Aware Ego Process.” Throughout the process, your comfort and safety remain central. We go only as far and as deep as you feel ready for.

Ultimately, Voice Dialogue helps you see how all your inner selves contribute in meaningful ways and deserve appreciation. As a result, you begin to develop more confidence, a kinder attitude toward yourself, and clearer, more grounded decision-making.

“I was at first a bit nervous to enter a Voice Dialogue session during a challenging period in my life. Bram radiated confidence and support to embark on the adventure. I found Bram’s guidance very professional, and in the secure environment, I could also allow vulnerable parts of myself to be present. The lovely place where Bram conducted the sessions added an extra touch to the whole experience. Bram led me to profound insights that helped me further on my journey in life.”

How did Voice Dialogue help me?

Feeling stuck on an inner conflict

Some time ago, I felt a tigthening inner conflict. My analytical side had brought me a lot of success in life; however, I increasingly struggled with a deep sense of guilt. I felt as if I was letting down the people who mattered most to me. As a result, I began to resent that analytical side, while at the same time I feared giving my emotional side more space. This combination created confusion, and I gradually started to feel worse about myself.

Discovering the role of my analytical side

During one of the Voice Dialogue sessions—part of my facilitator training—I discovered that my analytical side was actually pushing my emotions away to protect me from emotional pain. This side often says things like, “If you become emotional, you can’t think clearly,” or “You can talk about your feelings, but don’t actually feel them, because that hurts.”

Embracing the strength of my analytical side

However, this analytical side was not only critical. It was also a wonderful storyteller and a source of inspiration for others. It supported me in social situations and helped me break down large, complex problems into smaller, manageable steps. Because of that, I realized that this side also carried strength, clarity, and wisdom.

Embracing my emotional side

My emotional side, on the other hand, is usually quieter and sometimes sad. By intentionally giving this side more space, I did begin to feel more pain and tears behind my eyes; nevertheless, I also experienced more joy and a deeper sense of connection with others. As a result, I built up less tension and started to feel more relaxed and more connected—with myself and with the people around me.

The balance Voice Dialogue brings

Thanks to Voice Dialogue, I have learned to appreciate my analytical side again while also recognising and expressing my emotions more clearly. This balance now helps me inspire others: through a thoughtful analysis of their story, and through the emotional connection and empathy I am able to offer.
